Finding The Grandest Vision

One must see in it beautiful lawns of emerald green, soft as velvet, and groves of tall, graceful trees; rambling brooks with musical voices, expanding into lakes that mirror the swans floating on their surfaces; gondoliers filled with happy groups of maidens and cavaliers; bridges of graceful design; broad avenues filled with gay equipages and thousands of happy men, women and children filling the landscape.

This was the vision Dan Sickles had for Central Park, a place we now take for granted but that was once heavily opposed by an angry yet ill-informed and short-sighted majority. Sickles knew better than them, and in the end he defeated them all, securing Central Park as a prize for all of humanity to enjoy and benefit from.

Draining Lake Ronkonkoma is only the first step towards securing a bright new future for Ronkonkoma for our children and their grandchildren. Of course we could refill it and change the name to Lake Sickles, but there is literally no shortage of possibilities for better things to try.

Maybe you have a better idea, a vision as grand as the one Dan Sickles had for a pile of mud and sticks no one wanted. Building something incredible can set the stage for a New Ronkonkoma, one that is the centerpiece for Long Island in a future that belongs to the good people of the town.

We want to hear what you think should Replace The Lake. We’ll take the top entries and display them for the world to see. We’ll also award prizes to the best entries. So sharpen your pencil and grab a scotch. Then tell Lake Ronkonkoma where it should go.
